To the Journal editors:
As a former corrections officer, I watched the reckless shutdown of the federal government this fall with dismay.
Republicans clearly put politics before public safety and the best interests of our country, and we cannot afford to let that happen again.
U.S. Rep. Dan Benishek, R-Crystal Falls, please urge the budget conference committee end sequestration without forcing any changes to federal retirement. We should look to balance the budget by closing tax loopholes for corporations that ship jobs overseas.
Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare should not be part of a so-called grand bargain either.
Personally I won't be eligible for Medicare until April, and I want to make sure that such safety nets are strong, not just for me, but for future generations.
