NEGAUNEE - Her Negaunee High School girls gymnastics team lost to visiting Escanaba Monday night, but Miners' head coach Eyre Becker was encouraged, nevertheless.
"It was a close meet and we're getting closer to Escanaba all the time," she said after the Eskymos posted a 109.85-108.0 victory. "I'm looking forward to seeing us grow as the season progresses."
Negaunee's Emilie Thorvaldsen captured the balance beam with an 8.05 score and vaulting with an 8.7 effort.
She narrowly placed second to Escanaba's Rylee Doucette - who won the bars and floor exercise - by a 31.6-31.2 count.
"Escanaba's floor routines are always impeccable," Becker said, "but we basically lost by a couple of falls on the balance beam."
