ISHPEMING - Coach Ryan Reichel couldn't say enough about his Westwood High School boys basketball team's 64-52 non-conference win over visiting L'Anse on Monday night.

"It's the biggest win we've had as a program in my three years here," he said after the Patriots placed four players in double figures scoring-wise to improve to 1-1 on the season. "L'Anse is a top 5 team, in my opinion."

Luke Woods led the balanced WHS attack with 17 points. Justin Luke tossed in 12, while Patriot teammates Luke Gray and Quinn LeRoy added 11 apiece.

"It's the first time in my tenure here we've had four players in double figures," Reichel said. "Our rebounding was awesome, and our guards got the ball up and down the floor at a pace we wanted to play.

"It was an overall team effort."

L'Anse (1-2) got 18 points from Jimmy Veker and 11 from Keith Denomie.

The Purple Hornets led 42-39 heading into the fourth quarter before WHS rallied.

"We jumped on (Manistique) with the press right away," Mustangs head coach Dan Waterman said. "We hit a little lull at the end of the second quarter, but our intensity was great coming into the second half.

"I was real pleased with our effort."

North Central 78,

Republic-Michigamme 25

At Powers Monday night, the North Central boys had little trouble with Republic-Michigamme as the Jets cruised to victory.

North Central led 26-8 after the first quarter of the Skyline Conference outing.

"We were a little more patient with the ball in the second half," North Central coach Adam Mercier said. "We shared the ball well tonight."

Menominee 68,

Superior Central 40

At Eben, Cody Maki led the Cougars with 10 points as the lone Superior Central player to break double figures in scoring on Monday with Nick Maki posting nine points and Jesse Elsenbrock scoring seven.

Superior Central was within eight points late in the second quarter, trailing 30-22, but four consecutive turnovers with two being unforced killed the rally, according to SC head coach Herb Jenkins.

"Although our team is young overall, we need to take a step forward and compete and be focused for 32 minutes during the game and 100 percent of the time at practice," Jenkins said.

"If we do those two things, as a team, we will be successful. If not ,we will struggle.
