MARQUETTE - Northern Michigan University senior Rosie Frankowski and freshman Fredrik Schwencke led a Wildcats sweep of the classic races on Sunday at the Michigan Tech Challenge on the Tech Trails in Houghton.

Frankowski, who won the women's 10-kilometer freestyle race on Saturday in 32 minutes flat, completed the 5-K classic race on Sunday in 16:43 to take first place. In four races on the Tech Trails this season - two classic and two freestyle - Frankowski has won all of them.

In the men's 10-K classic, Schwencke won in 29:20, improving on his first-place time of 30:10 from a week ago in the classic race on the Tech Trails.

Joining Frankowski in the top 10 of the women's classic were sophomore Mary Kate Cirelli in second place (17:18), freshman Sophie Schimpl in fifth (17:55) and junior Felicia Gesior in seventh (17:57).

For the men, junior Kyle Bratrud was second in the classic in 29:41, followed by freshman Adal Martin in fifth (30:23) and senior George Cartwright in seventh (31:09).

"We are pleased with the outcome for the start of our season," NMU head coach Sten Fjeldheim said. "Rosie and Fredrik were quite dominant today. It was good to see Mary Kate and Kyle taking second places and pushing the leaders. It is good to have solid depth in the program. It's a great start for sure."

NMU has one more race before Christmas on Dec. 21-22 at the Wausau Ski Festival in Wausau, Wis.
