MARQUETTE - For the second straight week, the Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams will to Houghton, this time to compete in the Michigan Tech University Challenge.
Competition will begin at 1 p.m. today with freestyle races, then resumes at 11 a.m. on Sunday with classic action.
Senior Rosie Frankowski captured both the freestyle and classic races, posting times of 18:15 and 17:38, respectively.
On the men's side, Wildcat senior George Cartwright won the freestyle race in 31:52, while freshman Fredrik Schwencke took the classic event in 30:10.
NMU recognizes scholar athletes
MARQUETTE - Northern Michigan University's Athletic Council announced senior football player Brandon Parson as the NMU Student-Athlete Scholar of the Month for October and senior volleyball setter Kellisha Harley as the honoree for November.
Parson of Petersburg, Va., is majoring in mechanical engineering technology. He appeared in all 10 games this season, recording 37 tackles, four pass breakups and three interceptions.
Harley of Lakewood, Colo., is majoring in laboratory sciences. She appeared in all 33 games this season, recording a team-high 1,266 assists. She also logged 241 digs, 89 kills, 38 blocks and 37 service aces.
Parson was nominated by faculty member Mike Martin while Harley was nominated by faculty member Mary Stunkard.
'Cats holding volleyball tryouts
MARQUETTE - The Northern Michigan University volleyball program will be holding tryouts from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Vandament Arena in Marquette with registration from 11-11:45 a.m. and the tryout beginning at noon.
Individuals interested in trying out must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school and must have completed competition for the year in volleyball at their high school. Individuals may also be a junior college transfer or a four-year transfer who has a release from their current university.
All participants will need to submit a high school transcript, ACT or SAT test scores, a college transcript or release if applicable, a completed medical packet with a physical dates within the past six months and participants must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, all prior to Monday, Jan. 6, to participate in the tryout.
