Prep boys basketball roundup: Gwinn defense stymies Iron Mountain, hit free throws for M-PC victory

By Journal Sports Staff (sports@miningjournal.net) , The Mining Journal

GWINN - Gwinn outscored visiting Iron Mountain 19-6 at the free throw line Thursday night, but defense was really the name of the game for the Modeltowners in a 48-39 Mid-Peninsula Conference boys' victory over the Mountaineers, according to GHS head coach Darren Sinnaeve.

"We were outstanding in our full court press and in our half court play," Sinnaeve said. "We held (IM) to four points in the first 10 minutes of the game."

Gwinn (1-1, 1-0 M-PC) led 25-14 at the half, but the Mountaineers (1-1, 1-1) came back to forge a 32-32 deadlock with two minutes left in the third quarter.

"We just kept the pressure on and kept the ball away from their big guys to win," Sinnaeve said. "I was real pleased with the effort."

Owen DeVooght led Gwinn with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Morse added 11 points.

IM won the JV game, 64-20.
