ISHPEMING - Coach Kurt Corcoran says his Westwood High School girls basketball team took the visiting Marquette Redettes "out of their comfort zone" in a nonconference game Thursday night.

The Patriots just couldn't turn that into a win, however.

Placing three players in double figures, the Redettes took a 54-53 triumph to improve to 6-0 on the season.

Hunter Viitala scored 16 points to lead Marquette. Madalyne Connon added 13 and Destiny Beckwith chipped in 10.

Elizabeth Dauphinais-VanBuren notched 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Westwood (1-2), which trailed 32-18 at the half.

"We pressed for 32 minutes and caused some turnovers," Corcoran said. "Viitala had no points in the fourth quarter, too.

MANISTIQUE - A stellar defensive performance paid off for the Emeralds Thursday night as they earned a Mid-Peninsula Conference win over the Knights after leading 21-16 at halftime.

"Our pressure defense worked pretty well throughout the game and we could tell it wore them down a little in the fourth quarter," said Emeralds' coach Kelley Spettel. "We also ran a nice offense to keep the ball away from them at end of the game."

Maggie Morrison led the Emeralds (2-2 overall, 1-1 M-PC) with 11 points and eight rebounds. Allie Nagy, who sank 7-of-8 free throws, finished with nine points.

"This was Maggie's best game so far this year, and an all-around great job by Allie," said Spettel. "We're real happy with the balance we had tonight. Holding them to 34 points was nice, too. In three of our first four games, we've held our opponents under 40.

Rachel Conery led Norway (1-2 overall, 1-1 league) with 12 points.

The Emeralds held a 32-31 rebounding edge and committed 22 turnovers.

Manistique, which dropped the JV game 52-32, travels to Westwood Thursday.
