CALUMET - The Marquette Senior High School hockey team was tripped up Tuesday night in Great Lakes Hockey Conference play in a 5-3 loss to the Calumet Copper Kings on Tuesday in Calumet.

"I didn't like the outcome tonight," Marquette coach Doug Garrow said. "We had spurts where we played well, but overall I thought we regressed a bit compared to how we played this past week in the Sault, especially in our own end."

The Copper Kings took the lead midway through the first period on a marker by Braden Anderson, but Marquette's Cam Verigin tied the score late in the opening frame. The two teams traded goals early in the opening minutes of the third period, and again midway through the second period.

"Every time we gained some momentum, we'd score and then they'd respond," Garrow said.

The game winner came courtesy of a penalty shot after a Marquette player seemingly covered an open puck in the crease. The shot was taken by Calumet senior Travis Porter who beat the goaltender through his armpit 10:40 into the second period.

Marquette came out with more fire in the third, including a power play that had the local fans on the edge of their seat midway through the final frame as the ice seemed to be tilting against the Copper Kings. Just as the penalty expired, the Copper Kings got the boost they needed as senior forward Eric Mattila stole the puck from a defender and raced in alone on a breakaway. After a nifty move to his backhand and a top-shelf finish, the Copper Kings were up by two.
