Prep boys basketball roundup: Negaunee fights off Escanaba for season-opening victory

NEGAUNEE - Placing three players in double figures scoring-wise, the Negaunee High School boys basketball team opened its season with a 70-67 nonconference victory over visiting Escanaba on Tuesday night at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium in Negaunee.

Tyler Jandron poured in 25 points, Eric Lori scored 20 and Zane Radloff added 10 for the Miners of head coach Mike O'Donnell.

"It was nip-and-tuck the whole way," O'Donnell said. "Our guys battled and stuck with it.

"The story was, we kept our composure and made some plays down the stretch. It was a good test and a good game."

Brandon Robinette of the Eskymos led all scorers with 34 points. Teammate Sam Molnar chipped in 16.

"He's good," O'Donnell said of Robinette. "He can step up and shoot, and he's good at slashing (to the basket), too. He was a tough matchup for us.'

Gwinn 41

At Munising Tuesday night, Colin Immel (20) and Ben Stasewich (11) combined for 31 points to spark the Munising High School boys basketball team to a 53-41 nonconference victory over visiting Gwinn.

Stasewich added 12 rebounds for the Mustangs in their opening game of the season.

"It was kind of an ugly game," Munising head coach Dan Waterman said. "There were a lot of turnovers and missed free throws.

"But I was really happy with our effort. We forced a bunch of turnovers, enough to overcome a poor shooting night."

Alex Morse paced Gwinn with 12 points.

Gwinn won the junior varsity game, 46-33.
