December 9, 2013

ISHPEMING - The Ishpeming City Council amended the city's 2014 budget at its recent meeting to reflect additional revenues from an increase in water and sewer rates.

Sewer fund revenues were increased from $1 million to $1.8 million for the sewer use charge and the sewer capital improvement fund was increased from a balance of zero to $150,000.

Water fund revenues from metered water sales increased from just more than $1 million to roughly $1.5 million, and the water capital improvement fund was increased from zero to $100,000.

In other action, the council:

- Held a public hearing on the sale of city property on West Johnson Street to James and Angela Roat. No one spoke at the hearing.

- Granted an easement to Ishpeming Phelps Apartments Limited Dividend Housing Association LLC that will allow the building's existing canopies that hang over into city right of ways to remain. G.A. Haan Development of downstate Harbor Springs has an agreement with Ishpeming Public Schools to purchase the building.

- Approved a $6,241 reimbursement of the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library's Library Accessibility and Renovation Campaign Committee for costs of removing and draining an old fuel tank discovered while adding a barrier-free ramp to the library building. The library committee paid the costs with donor funds, which library Director John McNaughton said he believed was inappropriate, as the money was given specifically for the renovations

- Approved spending $4,500 from the public improvement city manager fund to buy a new copy machine.

- Approved City Manager Mark Slown to attend the Michigan Local Government Management Association 2014 Winter Institute in Battle Creek on Jan. 28-31
