PETOSKEY - Free throws were the secret weapon for Marquette on Saturday in capturing the Petoskey Invitational high school girls basketball tournament championship.
The Redettes made 30 free throws in a 59-43 victory over Brighton.
Leading 32-25 at halftime, Marquette opened a lead of eight to 10 points during the third quarter, according to Redettes coach Ben Smith.
"Then they closed it to within 46-42, but we were able to finish it at the line," he said as Marquette (3-0) ended the game on a 13-1 run.
Smith said this is some of the toughest competition his team faces all year.
"Last year, I think all four teams between them only lost 11 or 12 games,"?he said.
That includes Class D defending state champion St. Ignace, who Marquette defeated 55-44 in the opening round Friday.
The Redettes' Hunter Viitala was named tournament MVP after scoring 20 points Saturday to go with 18 on Friday. She made all nine of her free throw attempts and all three 3-point tries.
Maddie Connon was named to the all-tournament team as she pulled down team highs of 11 rebounds Saturday and seven on Friday. Teammate Kirsten Iwanski had a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds.
