Skate for Life event an excellent way to help great cause

December 6, 2013
The Mining Journal

Tonight and Saturday, hockey fans have the chance to watch some great action while at the same time aiding a special cause.

The inaugural Skate for Life, an event being planned by U.P. Run for Life, Superior Health Foundation and the Marquette Royales hockey team, is set for this weekend at Lakeview Arena in Marquette.

The event will include two great evenings of hockey between the Marquette Royales and Wisconsin Rampage of the Minnesota Junior Hockey League, 50/50 drawings and a silent auction which will close out at the Saturday night game. Special Skate for Life T-shirts and pucks will be available for purchase and any other donations, of course, are welcome.

Some Royales jerseys will also be auctioned off at the end Saturday night's game, with an online auction for some of the these special sweaters ongoing.

Also, immediately following Saturday night's game, Royales fans of all ages to skate with the Royales! Bring your skates and kids bring your helmets for an opportunity to skate with your favorite Royales players. Don't have skates? No problem, skates will be available for use.

Proceeds will stay in the Upper Peninsula and will go toward assisting transplant patients with medical costs, prescriptions and mileage expenses through Superior Health Foundation.

The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. both evenings. Tickets are just $6 for adults; $5 for seniors (65+), $4 for youth and $2 for active military (with ID).

The U.P. Run for Life organization, started by the dynamic Amy Harju, raised nearly $4,500 with 350-plus runners taking part in its second edition this past summer. It's a wonderful organization working to help those right here in the U.P. undergoing life-saving transplant procedures.
