MARQUETTE - The Marquette Educational Support Personnel Association Unit 1 has a new three-year contract following approval from the school board Monday night.
"Both sides made some concessions along the way and we were able to come to an agreement," said Interim Superintendent Bill Saunders.
The MESPA 1 union covers custodial, maintenance, food service and transportation workers.
The contract calls for a 1 percent off-schedule payment without any steps in the first year and 2 percent on schedule payments in years two and three, still with no steps.
The 1 percent payment is a one-time raise that will not affect the base salary outlined in the contract. However, the 2 percent on-schedule payment will be a raise added to the base pay.
Also included will be the option of the board at its June meeting to vote on an insurance hard-cap for the district or an 80/20 plan, in which the district pays 80 percent of premiums and the employees pay 20 percent.
The contract begins July 1 this year and will run through 2016.
The board approved the agreement in a 6-0 vote.
Board member Matthew Williams did not attend the meeting.
