MARQUETTE - Upper Peninsula native Yvonne Lockwood will present a program titled "Traditional Material Culture in Modern Finnish America" at 2 p.m. Friday in the Community Room at Peter White Public Library, Marquette.
Lockwood is the 2013 Finlandia Foundation Lecturer of the Year and former curator of folk life at the Michigan State University Museum. She will present her findings on the history and traditions of handcrafted goods, skills and practices of her Finnish-American heritage. She is the author of the book "Finnish American Rag Rugs: Art, Tradition, and Ethnic Continuity."
As part of the 96th Finnish Independence Day observation, the national anthems of Finland and the U.S. will be sung, and additional music will be provided by the MidSummer Strings. There will be coffee and refreshments.
