Craig Remsburg column: The All-Remsburg preseason high school basketball teams return

December 1, 2013
By CRAIG REMSBURG - Senior Sports Writer , The Mining Journal

It has been a long time coming.

The Upper Peninsula high school girls basketball season gets under way Monday, with the boys taking to the courts a week later.

It's always a special time of year. There's so much hype, so much hope, that it's impossible not to get excited about the season ahead.

Which players will soar? Ditto for U.P. teams.

Some players and teams will crank up their play a notch. Others may wind up posting underachieving seasons.

Avoiding injuries is a big part of the equation, of course. If you can't stay healthy, chances are you're not going to shine.

And if you don't break out of the gate fast enough, it'll be a struggle to rise to the top later on.

With all this in mind, it's time to revisit the Superiorland All-Remsburg Preseason boys and girls prep basketball honor squads.

The selections made will no doubt beg for disagreement. One person's criteria for someone making the list are not necessarily the same as another.

There's also a chance fans at a particular school not represented on the list will protest, saying their player - or players - should be included.

A deserving player not on the list could also be under the radar and wind up turning in a strong performance without media attention.

That being said, here's the All-Remsburg Preseason Teams for local boys and girls, in no particular order:

Girls

Hunter Viitala, Marquette, 5-foot-10 senior guard; Vanessa Freberg, Superior Central, 5-9 senior guard-forward; Jessica Spencer, Ishpeming, 5-10 junior forward; Madi Swanson, L'Anse, 5-2 senior guard; and Rosalie Anderson, Negaunee, 5-7 senior forward.

Others who were strong candidates to make the list were Teslyn Tyner, Superior Central, 5-4 senior guard; Ellie Olson, Gwinn, 5-7 junior guard; Elizabeth Dauphinais-VanBuren, Westwood, 5-5 senior guard-forward; Valerie Rajala, L'Anse, 5-9 senior forward; and Brooke Pasanen, Superior Central, 5-6 senior forward.

Boys

Tyler Jandron, Negaunee, 6-1 senior guard; Alex Briones, Ishpeming, 6-2, guard-forward; Andy Nyquist, Marquette, 6-2 senior guard; Jacob Ostermeyer, L'Anse, 6-1 junior guard; and Trevor Maki, Superior Central, 6-0 junior guard.

Just missing the list were Larry Burnette, Marquette, 6-2 forward; Justin Nyquist, Gwinn, 6-4 guard-forward; and Eric Lori, Negaunee, 5-10 senior guard.

How all these players perform this season will depend on a variety of factors, including staying healthy, overcoming double-teams, working within a coach's system and playing above and beyond their potential.

More likely than not, the aforementioned players will rise to the occasion and turn in banner campaigns.

Let the games begin.
