Cheer on the Hematites today at Ford Field

Where we stand

November 30, 2013
The Mining Journal

If you're reading this page while having your first cup of coffee of the morning, there is still time for you to watch the Ishpeming Hematite football team defend its Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 7 title.

The Hematites will be taking on the Detroit Loyola Bulldogs at 10 a.m. today at Ford Field. That's the same team IHS faced and defeated in 2012.

It should be a heck of a game. Coached by Jeff Olson, the Hematites ran over their opponents, racking up a perfect record this season.

The same can be said about the Bulldogs, who head into the contest undefeated.

We are sure that Ford Field will be filled with Hematite fans, not only from Ishpeming, but from around the Upper Peninsula and throughout the rest of our fair state.

The scrappy, underdog Hematites won many hearts with their incredible journey to a state championship in 2012. This year's team is special, too.

The game can be viewed on Fox Sports Detroit or listened to on WRUP 98.3FM.

The U.P. takes a great deal of pride in the quality of its high school sports teams and the football Hematites are at the top of the list of not only fine athletes but exceptional young men. We hope they bring home the hardware.

But even if they don't, they deserve a great deal of praise for another amazing season.

The Hematites will be saluted at 6 p.m. Sunday at the school. We hope that welcome home is packed with cheering fans, thanking the coaches and the team for another unforgettable football season.

Go Blue and White!
