ISHPEMING - Ishpeming High School held a pep rally on Wednesday afternoon for its varsity football team, which plays Detroit Loyola at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit for the MHSAA Division 7 state football championship on Fox Sports Detroit.

During Wednesday's pep rally inside Peterson Auditorium at Ishpeming High/Middle School, head football coach Jeff Olson and the keynote speaker Brian Sarvello, the former IHS principal, spoke a lot about how the Hematites are again being underestimated. Both compared the rematch to a David vs. Goliath situation.

Olson said the Detroit Free Press reporter he spoke to said once again Ishpeming is a Cinderella story, only this year she has a prettier dress.

Sarvello referenced a comment by Detroit Loyola's coach about how Ishpeming used its only stone last year. He said what the coach neglected to consider was the Hematites "have two big stones in their sack." The comment drew much laughter and applause.
