'Project Nim' showing Monday
MARQUETTE - DocuMonday presents "Project Nim" at 7 p.m. Monday in the Peter White Public Library Community Room, Marquette.
This documentary is about Nim, a chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of an experiment which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child.
Following Nim's extraordinary journey through human society, and the impact he makes on the people he meets along the way, the film is a biography of an animal people tried to make human.
"Project Nim" was released in 2011, is rated PG-13 and runs for 93 minutes.

Hematite reception is Sunday
ISHPEMING - A reception to welcome home the Ishpeming Hematite varsity football team from the Division 7 State Championship game will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Ishpeming High School Gym, Ishpeming.
Donations of baked goods are welcomed.
Lions sponsor breakfast buffet
MARQUETTE - The Ishpeming Lions and the TriTownship Lions Clubs will be sponsoring the Holiday Breakfast Buffet from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the St. Joseph Hall, Ishpeming.
The cost is $8 and tickets are available at the door. All proceeds help with assisting various charities such as Bay Cliff Health Camp, Salvation Army, St. Vincent DePaul, Northwoods Air Lifeline, Habitat for Humanity, sight preservation, eye exams and glasses, scholarships, youth programs and many other local charities.
Marquette Twp. tree lighting
MARQUETTE - Marquette Charter Township's Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Westwood Mall parking lot, Marquette.
The evening with will feature a variety of family-friendly activities including live music, hay wagon rides, a visit from Santa Claus as well as the tree lighting ceremony, which features a U.P. tree donated by Sargent Evergreens Tree Farm in Gladstone.
Santa Claus is scheduled to arrive on a Marquette Township Fire truck at 6 p.m. to light the tree, and the Marquette Redman Chorale will be performing selected holiday songs.
After the Christmas tree is lit, guests will be free to enter the mall for reduced cost professional photos with Santa (families can also take their own pictures), and enjoy free hot chocolate, apple juice, and cookies inside the mall compliments of the Snack Shack and the Super One Foods Bakery. Doug Gentz/John Deere will have tractors and hay trailers on hand to give free hay rides for the family.
Due to reports that a "Grinch" may again be on the loose in the Township, disrupting the Christmas Spirit and looking to prevent the tree lighting ceremony, Marquette County Sheriff's will be patrolling the area committed to making sure the Grinch doesn't run away with the Marquette Township Christmas Spirit!
