Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Sandstrom

MARQUETTE, MI. - Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Sandstrom, age 94, lifelong Marquette resident, entered eternal life Monday evening, November 25, 2013, at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee, in the loving, comforting care of her family and the caregivers at Eastwood.

Born July 5, 1919 in Marquette, a daughter of Adelard and Ida (Dubois) Bertrand, Betty was raised in Marquette and graduated from the Graveraet High School. Through the years, she held a variety of jobs in the community, from working as an elevator operator and desk clerk at the former Northland Hotel (Landmark Inn), serving as a receptionist for the Marquette Chamber of Commerce, to working in the food service department at Northern Michigan University in the Wildcat Den. Following retirement, she served as a crossing guard for the Marquette Public Schools at the Parkview Elementary School location, corner of Pine and Hewitt Streets. Betty loved music, was an avid reader, enjoyed dancing, playing the piano, walking, and baking. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral and participated in the activities at the Senior Citizen Drop-In Center, especially line dancing.

A beloved mother and grandmother, she is survived by her daughters, Mary (Paul) L'Huillier of Harvey and Janet (Robert) Barton of Jefferson City, MO; her son, Bruce (Chris) Sandstrom of Marquette; grandchildren, Valeri (John) Kelly, Nathan (Andrea) L'Huillier, and Cassandra (Daniel) Nett, Eric (Kristin) Sandstrom, Brett (Nicole) Sandstrom, Heather Sandstrom, Jason (Trisha) Sandstrom, and Bryan (Jessica) Sandstrom; her great-grandchildren, Sean, Michael, and Keira Kelly, Carter, Ella, Collin, Destinee, Eathan, Seth, Hunter, Grace, and Asher Sandstrom, Madeline Nett, Peyton and Leland L'Huillier; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Anselm A. "Sandy" Sandstrom in 1991; her sisters, Angeline Vaughan, Corrine Hooper, Rose O'Neill, Jeanette Bertrand, and Alice Chudyk; brothers, Rolland and Raoul Bertrand; sisters-in-law, Anna Tinetti and Edith Bengston; and brothers-in-law, Nestor, Walter, and Turri Sandstrom.

The family will receive relatives and friends in the Bishop's Room located at St. Peter Cathedral on Friday, November 29, beginning at 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the cathedral at 12:00 noon with Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber, pastor, as celebrant.

Betty's grandsons will serve as escorts. A reception will follow in Cathedral Hall. Burial will be made in the Negaunee Cemetery in the spring.

Memorials may be directed to Eastwood Nursing Center Activity Fund or the charity of donor's choice.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and residents of the Eastwood Nursing Center for the fine care and many kindnesses extended to Betty and her family over the past six years.
