NEGAUNEE, MI. - Mae M. Rogers, 102, longtime Negaunee resident, died at 11:50 p.m. on Friday, November 22, 2013 at the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had resided since June.
Mae was born May 20, 1911 in Crystal Falls to Adolph and Ida (Williams) Miller, moved to Negaunee in 1922, lived on Case St. and was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1929. She was employed as a licensed practical nurse at the Twin City Hospital in Negaunee and met Erland Hill whom she married in 1939. She worked at Morgan Heights in Negaunee Township before taking a break from nursing, taking a job at the Main Drift Restaurant. She returned to nursing and other jobs included precision sewing at two different dress factories. She also worked at the Negaunee Senior Center, taking care of senior meals for 10 years, retiring at the age of 75. Her husband Erland died in 1966 and she married Gordon "Bud" Rogers in 1981. He passed away in 2001.
Mrs. Rogers was a member of Mitchell United Methodist Church, Negaunee, for over 80 years, was a member of the United Methodist Women, and was the writer of the church's newsletter. She was a member of the Jolly Elders and had served as the president of that organization. Mae was a talented poet and was a very active and social person who entertained friends with her great sense of humor.
Surviving are her daughter, Jill Tessaro of Gwinn, 3 grandchildren: Larry Jay (Debbie) Wendt of Negaunee, Jodie (Terril) Blue and Traci (Butch Barnett) Merrill, both of Perry, FL, 5 grandchildren: Brandin (Jessica) Wendt, Kyle and Cody Blue, Tiarra and Lari Lee Wendt, 2 great great grandchildren, 4 step-children: Gordon (Marietta) Rogers of Kenosha, WI, Leonard (Pat) Rogers of Colorado, Sandra (Bob) Lequier of Hudson, FL, Marlene (Gary) Anderson of Palmer, 14 step-grandchildren, 21 step-great grandchildren, 8 step-great great grandchildren, a special friend Pat Lowney of Harvey, numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her 1st husband Erland Hill, her 2nd husband Gordon "Bud" Rogers, 2 brothers: James and Raymond Miller, a sister, Jayne Hoppens, and a son-in-law, John Tessaro in 2010.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, November 27th at Mitchell United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Dobson officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 3:00 pm until the time of services at 4:00 pm at the church on Wednesday.
