MARQUETTE - The Marquette-Alger Reading Council recently kicked off its annual Gift of Reading project.
The project involves collection boxes being placed in local schools, libraries and bookstores for people to donate new books. The books will be given to needy families and adults at Christmas time and throughout the year.
In addition, the council distributes new books to youth service agencies, public health and dental centers, nursing homes, the veteran's center, Harbor House, Beacon House, the Women's Center and many other locations.
Eero Rutz, 3, and his mother Betsy Rutz drop the first book into the Gift of Reading collection box at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.
Over the years, the project has collected more than 30,000 books. The last day for donations is Dec. 6.
Donations for purchasing of new books are also accepted and checks can be sent to MARC at P.O. Box 1084, Marquette, MI 49855.
