Killer Whales sweep in Ironwood

MARQUETTE -Killer Whale swimmers Colin and Erin Vanderschaaf swept all their individual events at the Barracuda Fall Sprint Invitational held at Gogebic Community College in Ironwood.

Colin, 8, broke a nine-year-old team record in the 25-yard backstroke while winning the race in a time of 19.69 seconds.

He also won the 25-yard butterfly (18.59), 100 IM (1:27.21, team record); 25 freestyle (15.46) and the 50 freestyle (34.55, team record).

Colin has qualified for the YMCA state championships in multiple events.

Erin, 10 , set a personal best time en route to winning the 50 backstroke in 37.69. She also topped the field in 200 IM (2:58.58, state qualifying time), 50 breaststroke (46.03), 50 freestyle (33.67) and 100 freestyle (1:14.75).

Teammate Elina Zhang, 11, notched two wins for the local YMCA team. She took the 200 IM (3:02.96) and 50 breaststroke (42.43).

Other events winners for the YMCA Killer Whales were: Samantha Olson, 12, (50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle); Antoni Olszewski, 15, (50 butterfly, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle); Ryszard Olszewski, 12, (50 butterfly, 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Carson Vanderschaaf, 8, 25 breaststroke.
