Negaunee City Council expected to approve 2014 budget

NEGAUNEE - The Negaunee City Council is expected to adopt the city's 2014 budget at its meeting Thursday, after holding several budget sessions open to the public.

Proposed general fund revenues and expenditures are set at just more than $3.9 million.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Negaunee Senior Center.

The Negaunee City Council will also consider an approximately $44,000 change order to the city's U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Wastewater Improvements project.

The proposed change "will move the planned route along Rail Street" and move it to the "recently acquired Iron Ore Heritage Property behind the Ice Arena," according to council packet materials.

The packet says the move will "greatly reduce the impact to transportation during construction" and maintenance and "would enable abandonment of a partially collapsed 10-inch clay tile sanitary sewer line servicing the Ice Arena and other residences."

The current approximately 90-year-old sanitary sewer line complicates sewer repairs, the change order says, because the ice arena was built directly over it.

Additionally, the council will adopt a motion required by city ordinance to attach customers' delinquent utility payments to the December tax roll for collection.

It will also pass a resolution honoring former Mayor Richard Wills for his contributions to the community "by unselfishly contributing his time, energy and effort toward making the City of Negaunee a better community for all of its citizens."
