REPUBLIC, MI. - William C. (Bill) Wixtrom, age 77, of Republic died peacefully at his home, under the loving care of his family & the U.P. Home Health and Hospice, on Sunday, November 10, 2013.
Bill was born in the old Witch Lake schoolhouse to Seth and Mae (Doan) Wixtrom on April 22, 1936. He grew up in Witch Lake and worked in the sawmill and woods with his father and brothers from the time he was a teenager. He graduated from the Republic High School, class of 1954. After serving in the Army as an Ambulance dispatcher, he returned to the sawmill business, eventually taking over the ownership and management of Wixtrom Lumber Company, until 1998 when his son Will took over. Bill enjoyed hunting and making the annual trip to his brother Jack's camp at Hubbard's Marsh to hunt and play cards with the guys. He was an avid Packer and Tiger fan. He also loved the many gatherings and picnics at his camp on Chief Lake. One of Bill's favorite hobbies was woodworking. His quality of work was excellent. He particularly enjoyed making gavels of various wood species and giving them away to family and friends.
Bill attended the First Baptist Church of Witch Lake and until recently, was an active member of the Republic Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife Luana (Mattson) Wixtrom, four children Angela Wixtrom (Andrew Huebner) of Tujunga, CA, Shelli Wixtrom (Scott McMath) of Midland, MI, William S. Wixtrom of Witch Lake and Eric (Shannon) Wixtrom of Republic; 12 grandchildren Crystal and Scarlet Quezada, Dylan and Sonja Anderson, Quinn McMath, and Sylvia, Evelyn, Adam, Thomas, Amelia and twins, Isaac and Caleb Wixtrom; one great grandson Jason Quezada; sisters Marcelle Houlmont, Donna Erickson and Nancy (Fred) Spanton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Lennard (Marilyn) Mattson, Clifford (Karen) Mattson, Wilfred (Anne) Mattson, Bernice Enderle, Aurelia Matheny, Arleen Wixtrom, and Helen Wixtrom along with many nieces and nephews. Bill also leaves two very special friends, Aaron Wixtrom and Ted DeWitt.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers Jack, Bruce and James Wixtrom and one sister June Laakso.
Bill's family will greet relatives and friends from 10:30 a.m. noon on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Witch Lake. A memorial service will follow at noon on Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Witch Lake, with Pastor James Janofski officiating. A luncheon will follow the service in the church hall.
Bill's family wishes to thank the UP Home Health and Hospice Nurses, the Iron Mountain V.A. Hospital, Doctors, Nurses and Staff and the Dickinson Radiation Clinic, Doctors and Staff for their kind treatment and care of Bill during his lengthy illness.
