MARQUETTE - Both Ishpeming and Negaunee will play MHSAA regional championship playoff football games at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Due to a higher playoff point total earned during the regular season, Ishpeming (11-0) gets to play at home in Division 7 against Lake City (10-1), which defeated Lincoln Alcona 56-14 on Saturday afternoon. Hematites athletic director Terry Roberts announced the game time shortly after the Lake City-Alcona game was decided.
Ishpeming won its district championship game Friday night at West Iron County, 34-0. The Hematites defeated Lake City 28-12 last year at the same point in the playoffs.
Negaunee (10-1), on the other hand, has to go to Ithaca (11-0) because the Yellowjackets have a higher playoff point total. NHS announced Friday that a student bus will leave in the predawn hours Saturday and arrive back late that evening for a trip of about 360 miles each way. Sign-up for that bus will be from 7 a.m. to noon Monday at the high school office. Cost is $55.
The Miners defeated Boyne City 42-19 on Friday night, while Ithaca took care of Maple City Glen Lake, 42-7. The Yellowjackets have a 53-game winning streak, including playoffs, and are the three-time defending Division 6 state champions.
Tickets for these games will cost $5 per person.
