Legion Bantams AA win Traverse City tourney

MARQUETTE - A 7-0 triumph over the West Kent County Hawks enabled the Marquette American Legion Bantam AA hockey team to capture the Grand Traverse Hockey Association Tournament at Traverse City the weekend of Nov. 1-3.

Legion (16-1-1) won all five of its games, outscoring its opponents 37-1.

Colin Gaffney scored three goals and Nick Bink two to spur Legion (16-1) against the Hawks. Hunter Doucette and Joey Phillips added single markers.

Picking up assists were Justin Moyle, Spencer DenBeste (2), Branden Woodward, Shane Ring, Alec Gadzinski, Ryan Morrissey, Phillips (3), Doucette and Gaffney. Marquette goalie Dylan Sibilsky made nine saves.

"You can see the kids are getting better every game," Legion head coach Brian Nebel said. "Only giving up 43 shots and one goal all weekend speaks volumes on our commitment to defense."

In its semifinal contest, Legion thumped the Thunder Bay Wrecks of Alpena, 8-1, behind two goals each by Bink, Ring and Phillips. Morrissey and Woodward also notched markers.

Collecting assists were Woodward, Ring, DenBeste (2), Gadzinski, Gavin Schwalbach, Aydin Frost (2), Morrissey (4), Phillips, Doucette (2), and Gaffney. Marquette netminder Luke McCarthy came up with eight stops.

Late Nov. 2, Legion blanked Sault Ste. Marie, 8-0, behind nine saves by Sibilsky. Bink (3) and Phillips (2) combined for five goals. Also finding the net were Andrew Pieper, DenBeste and Morrissey.

Picking up helpers were Spencer Samppala, Moyle (2), DenBeste (2), Frost, Justin Hendrickson, Morrissey (2) and Gadzinski (3).

Earlier the same day, the Marquette skaters shut out the West County Hawks, 4-0. McCarthy made 10 stops in goal. Gadzinski, Bink, Ring and Phillips registered markers for Legion. Earning assists were DenBeste (2), Phillips, Morrissey, Gaffney and Samppala.

In a 10-0 preliminary round game to open the tournament Nov. 1, Legion blanked the Ann Arbor Wolves, 10-0, as Sibilsky came up with six stops.

Leading the offense were Gaffney with three goals and Morrissey with two. Bink, Ring, DenBeste, Phillips and Doucette also provided markers. Collecting helpers were Ring (3), Hendrickson (2), Doucette, Woodward (2), Pieper, Schwalbach, Phillips (2), Frost (2) and Moyle.

City Insurance places

second in TC

The Marquette City Insurance Pee Wee AA hockey team finished second in the Grand Traverse Hockey Association Tournament in downstate Traverse City Nov. 1-3.

A 4-2 loss to Canton Victory Honda in the title game left the Sentinels (11-2-1) with a runner-up finish. Luke Beerman posted a goal and an assist for City Insurance. Teammate Jon Jason added a goal and Gaetano Cammarata an assist. Tyler Bergwall made 21 saves in net for Marquette.

In a semifinal contest, City Insurance downed Compuware, 5-2. Beerman scored all five goals for the winners. Cammarata, Jason and Thomas Dunleavy recorded two helpers apiece; Russ Modell chipped in one. Bergwall came up withy 15 stops.

On Nov. 2, City Insurance blanked Orchard Lake United, 7-0, as Preston Maki turned aside 14 shots on net for the Sentinels. Beerman notched three goals and an assist, while Jason picked up two goals and a helper. Single markers were posted by Peyton Anderson, Sean O'Connor and Modell. Cammarata collected two helpers, with Karsten Kamps, Luke Labre and Cooper Anderson chipping in one each.

The Sentinels opened the tournament Nov. 1 with a 13-0 thumping of the Suburban Ice Northstars. Beerman led the way offensively with five goals and an assist, while O'Connor contributed three markers and a helper. Jakob Peterson notched two goals, while Anderson, Dunleavy and Jason each added a goal and an assist. Also earning helpers were Kamps and Cammarata with two apiece, Brent Kroll and Chris Silva. Bergwall made six stops in the shutout.
