MARQUETTE - Colin Vanderschaaf of the YMCA Killer Whales swim team turned in a performance the weekend of Nov. 1-3 he'll long remember.
Vanderschaaf, 8, won four races - setting three team records in the process - at the three-day Fox Cities Fall Classic Swim Meet in Appleton, Wis.
He claimed the 25-yard breaststroke (21.59, team record); 50 freestyle (35.40, team record), 25 butterfly (19.24) and the 25 backstroke (20.20).
He also placed second in the 100 IM (1:30.95) and lowered his own team record in the 25 freestyle (second) with a time of 15.23.
Vanderschaaf joined Killer Whales teammates OIivia Rouleau and Sam Williams in qualifying for the YMCA state championship.
Rouleau, 17, ruled the older girl's events with five first place finishes. She won the 50 freestyle (27.49), 100 freestyle (59.45), 200 freestyle (2:10.78), 200 butterfly (2:33.41) and 100 backstroke (1:10.43).
Williams, 15, nabbed four events in the boy's 15-18 age group. He struck first in the 200 IM (2:12.87), then finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.93), 200 butterfly (2:12.87) and the 200 breaststroke (2:26.18).
He also medaled in the 200 backstroke (third).
Also qualifying for state competition was Carson Vanderschaaf, 8, who placed second in the 25 butterfly (20.86).
Thomas Griffith broke a 10-year team record in the boys' age 11-12 division in the 100 freestyle with a 1:04.61 swim.
The YMCA of Marquette County's only other event winner was Erin Vanderschaaf, 10. She claimed the girls' 9-10 100 backstroke (1:22.96), while also medaling in the 200 IM (third), 100 IM (second) and 100 freestyle (second).
Other Killer Whale medalists (top 3 finish) at the meet were: Griffith, (200 IM, 3rd; 50 backstroke, second; 50 freestyle, third; and 200 freestyle, second); Ben Luke, 15, (100 backstroke, third); and Carson Vanderschaaf (100 IM, third; 25 freestyle third; 25 breaststroke, third; 50 freestyle, second; and 25 backstroke, third)
Paige Whaley, 11, earned third in the 200 freestyle and Hannah Winn, 9, placed second in the girls' 9-10 100 butterfly.
