MARQUETTE - The Marquette Soccer Academy Girls Under-12 team defended its championship at the Coca-Cola Youth Classic soccer tournament held in Milwaukee from Oct. 4-6.
Marquette went 3-1 during the weekend to take the tournament crown for the second straight year.
"I'm delighted to have retained our Milwaukee title after moving up a bracket," MSA coach Jack Curtain said. "We now look forward with excitement to the spring and summer season. I am excited to see what we can achieve."
The girls began their weekend with a 4-2 win over the Rapid Kickers on goals by Emily Paupore, Elina Zhang and Grace Garrow. Paupore then scored twice but it wasn't enough in a 6-2 loss to MK GSC United.
Marquette rebounded in Game 3 for a 5-1 win against MK Sirocco Blue as Paupore added three more scores and Kayley Elmblad had two.
In the championship game, the girls turned the tables on MK GSC United, winning 2-0 with both goals by Paupore and a shutout in net by Ahnika Puskala.
"The way the girls bounced back from the 6-2 defeat was phenomenal," Curtain said. "They showed that they have not only a great deal of talent, but also courage, which is vital."
