Wells Fargo U14 girls win Ice Breaker

MARQUETTE - A 2-0 win over the Algoma Hawks in the championship game gave the Wells Fargo U14 girls hockey team of Marquette the 17th Annual Ice Breaker Cup title in tourney play held in Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario, Canada).

Hannah Swajanen and Lexi Anderson scored for Wells Fargo, with Ashley Francis getting an assist.

Goaltender Briana Holman posted 13 saves in the shutout.

Wells Fargo's previous game resulted in a 1-0 loss to the Hawks, despite a 19-6 edge in shots. Holman came up with five stops.

In their second weekend game, the local skaters tripped Soo Canadian Tire, 2-1, behind markers by Hannah Zerbst and Hannah Swajanen. Francis assisted on both. Holman came up with 20 saves for the winners.

In Wells Fargo's opening game, Francis notched two goals and Paris Wegleitner added a single marker in a 3-1 win over the Sudbury Stars.

Drawing assists were Sydney Lake, Swajanen, Alexis white and Anderson. Hokman made 10 saves in net.
