MARQUETTE - November is National Hospice Month, and Lake Superior Hospice and Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice officially rang in the occasion Friday with the third annual Marquette County Bells for Hospice event at the Marquette Commons building.

Volunteers, staff and area residents came together to help celebrate the preciousness of life and to remember the lives of lost loved ones.

Several local churches rang their bells at noon, which was followed by a hand-bell ringing event by the group, who also sang "Amazing Grace."

"The event is to raise awareness about hospice care, and have an event for everyone who has been touched by hospice," said Carol Carr, CEO of Lake Superior Hospice.

Marquette resident Margo Yatchak, who lost her husband in August 2012, attended the event for the first time. She said the help that her hospice grief share support group was able to give her is unparalleled.

"It's different, going to meetings with other people who know how you feel," Yatchak said. "I couldn't say enough about them. They are wonderful."

Dr. Jeff Nyquist, CEO of U.P. Home Health and Hospice, said the event gives people who have been involved in hospice a chance to meet each other.

"It's just a very home-grown approach for the people who have been affected by hospice, which is an extraordinary amount of people at this point," Nyquist said.

On Nov. 6, Lake Superior Hospice will be hosting "Hops for Hospice," a beer and food pairing fundraiser to benefit the Lake Superior Hospice Patient Care Fund. It will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ore Dock Brewing Co. at 114 Spring St. in Marquette. Single tickets are $30 and couples are $55.
