To the Journal editor:
Powell Township Fire Department was recently awarded a $100,000 grant from the Cliffs/Eagle Mine Marquette County Community Fund for assistance in purchasing a newer or possibly new pumper-tanker tire truck.
With this generous donation, the fire department will be able to replace an obsolete 1979 fire truck at station No. 2 located in the Halfway village area.
Fire protection equipment is expensive which makes it difficult for small communities to keep up with changes in technology, a modern fire truck will greatly improve the safety of the volunteer fire men and women along with the residents and visitors to Powell Township.
For several years our department has been pursuing grants to replace this vehicle without success. With this substantial award, along with the remaining funds from a township millage for emergency services equipment, we will be able to significantly enhance our ability to respond to the fire protection needs of the residents of Powell Township as well as our neighboring townships.
Because of our unique geographic location our fire department covers areas of the adjoining townships of Ishpeming, Champion, Marquette and Michigamme.
We are grateful to the Cliffs/Eagle Mine-Marquette County Community Fund for providing assistance for the purchase of this vehicle, and commend their efforts to help communities throughout the county with projects that would otherwise be unattainable. Thank you again.
