ISHPEMING, MI. - Roland E. Keto, age 92, of 309 W. Ridge St., Ishpeming passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at the Mather Nursing Center where he had resided for the past 2 years.
Roland was born August 21, 1921 in National Mine, MI the son of the late Gust and Fannie (Nuorala) Keto. Roland attended the National Mine School, graduating in 1940. While at National Mine he was a member of the High School Basketball team that went undefeated in the 1939-40 season. He served in the United States Army state side as a MP during World War II from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Roland married the late Marion Hammar on July 31, 1948. He had worked 41 years for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. as a power plant operator at the steam plant in Ishpeming retiring in 1983. Roland enjoyed spending time at his camp which he built on Lake Arfelin, that included pontoon rides around the lake and playing horse shoes. He was an avid bowler in various Ishpeming Leagues, and also playing in the Ishpeming Cribbage League. Roland was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and a former member of the Ishpeming Elks Lodge.
Survivors include three sons Dennis Keto of Ishpeming, Gary (Linda) Keto of McKinney, TX, & Steven (Chris) Keto of Oconomowoc, WI, 2 grandchildren Dan (Jessica) Keto of Milwaukee and Brian Keto of Chicago, IL, and a step-grandson Jared Sandifer of McKinney, TX.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marion on Jan. 1, 2013, a step-son Justin Sandifer along with 3 brothers and 7 sisters.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00noon until 1:00pm on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. A memorial service will follow at 1:00pm on Saturday with the Rev. Kenneth Lahners to officiate. Military honors will be accorded by the Viet Nam Veterans of America, Chapter 380. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall.
