Munising, SC take Central U.P. crown down to the wire

NEGAUNEE - Despite some big statistics from the Anderson sisters and Jayda Johnson, Negaunee lost 3-1 at home against Gladstone in a non-conference high school volleyball match played Tuesday evening.

The Braves recorded a 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18 victory as Johnson, a senior setter, recorded three kills, six digs, seven service aces and eight assists. Senior hitter Rosalie Anderson added six kills, four digs and an assist, while junior hitter Adena Anderson had 12 digs and a kill.

Negaunee (8-7) also got three kills and four digs from junior Alexa Olgren, 11 assists and two digs from junior Hannah Laurila, three kills and two digs from junior Katelyn Johnson, five aces and a dig from senior BreAnna Leanes, and two kills, two blocks and two digs from junior Emilee Lokken.

Mustangs win back to

back matches

Munising won back-to-back Central Upper Peninsula Conference matches after losing the first set, beating Carney-Nadeau at home on Monday, 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-17, then winning at North Central on Tuesday, 25-27, 25-20, 25-19, 26-24.

On Monday, Karlee Decet posted nine kills and two aces for the Mustangs. Bailey Downs added 12 assists and four aces, while Megan Watson came up with 12 digs and two aces.

"Carney-Nadeau played great defense all night, though we attacked well," Munising head coach Josh Cole said.

"In the first game, our serving was poor. In games 2-4, our serving was still off, but we found a way to grind out a (match) win.

Munising won the JV match, 25-18, 25-11.

On Tuesday at Powers, the Mustangs clinched a share of the CUP title as they and Superior Central each have one league loss. Munising completed its CUP season while SC hosts Mid Peninsula Thursday.

The Mustangs also won the JV match in two sets, though scores weren't available.

Cougars sweep Jets

At Eben Monday, the Superior Central High School girls volleyball team defeated the North Central Jets 25-18, 25-19, 25-21.

"We played well and were able to spread our attacks across the board, setting up 25 team kills," SC head coach Kris Bray said.

The Cougars were led by Vanessa Freberg with five aces, nine kills, three blocks and four digs.

Ally Bray added 20 assists and two digs; Brooke Pasanen contributed seven kills and five digs; Brianna Emard turned in seven kills; and Rebecca Wells chipped in 10 digs.

SC won the junior varsity match, 25-14, 25-17.
