Wesley R. Carlson

DOLLAR BAY - Wesley R. Carlson, 95, of Dollar Bay, died Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Jacobetti State Veterans Home in Marquette where he had been a resident since December, 2010.

He was born on July 3, 1918, in Wolverine, a son of Theodore and Johanna (Hyrkas) Carlson. He was a 1937 graduate of Hancock High School. On November 14, 1942, he married Bertha (Betty) Nordbeck. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, having served in North Africa, Sicily, France and Germany.

Wesley was a member and past commander of Bay Post #6028 V.F.W. of Dollar Bay and the American Legion Alfred Erickson Post #186 of Hancock and a former member of the Order of Runeberg Lodge #8 of Dollar Bay.

Wesley was employed by the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company since graduating from high school until his retirement in 1975. He was the store manager in Hancock for many years. He also worked at stores in Iron Mountain, Marquette, Calumet and Ishpeming.

Wesley enjoyed fishing for lake trout and spending time at his hunting camp near Mohawk.

Preceding him in death were his wife Betty, granddaughter Melanie Carlson, 5 brothers: Harry, George, William, Karl, and Art, 3 sisters: Helen, Esther, and Sylvia. Surviving are: 2 Sons: Gerald (Gail) Carlson of Marquette, and Raymond Carlson of Negaunee; 2 Daughters: Gail Joyal of Dollar Bay, and Carol (Steve) Koss of Negaunee; 5 Grandchildren: Jason Carlson of Negaunee, Christopher Carlson of Ishpeming, Jennifer Joyal of Houghton, Thomas Joyal of Lake Linden, and Lenora Joyal of Portage, WI Several nieces and nephews

Funeral services for Wesley will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock with the Rev. Sally Wilke to officiate. Veterans services will follow by the Copper Country Veterans Association. Burial will follow at the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 A.M. until time of services.
