NMU cross county: Cats take fifth in Houghton at GLIAC Championships

HOUGHTON - The Northern Michigan University women's cross country team finished fifth overall on Saturday at the GLIAC Championships held on the campus of Michigan Tech University in Houghton.

Sophomore Mary Kate Cirelli led the Wildcats with a 15th place finish, crossing the finish line in 22 minutes, 57.2 seconds.

Sophomore Megan Edic also posted a top 30 finish, coming in 27th in 23:34.8.

Also competing for the Wildcats were Olivia Howard (34th, 23:43.9), Christina Toogood (37th, 23:44.9), Jordyn Ross (39th, 23:55.5), Larissa Halonen (41st, 23:57.4) and Chelsea Farquhar (70th, 24:41.6).

The Wildcats of head coach Jenny Ryan finished with 152 points.

GLIAC champion Grand Valley State scored 30 points, with four runners placing in the top 10 and all seven finishing in the top 20.

Saginaw Valley State placed second with 84 points, Malone took third at 113 and Hillsdale came in fourth with 136.

The host Huskies took 12th with 298 points. They were led by Sarah Daniels' 38th-place finish in 23:53.7.

Up next for the Wildcats is the Nov. 9 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional meet at Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.
