MARQUETTE - Rain, snow or shine, today's Rocktoberfest in Munising should be a blast for people of all ages.

"We're hoping this year the weather will turn out nice," said organizer Scott Kusmirek. "But in the event the weather is bad, we have the bands performing inside the Moose Lodge banquet hall which holds close to 300 people.

"The wiener dog races, bounce house and other kids activities will take place outside underneath the tent," Kusmirek said. "We are Yoopers and 40-degree weather should not faze us."

The second annual Rocktoberfest starts at 1 p.m. today at the Munising Moose Lodge, corner of Lynn Street and Munising Avenue. The day of fun is hosted by the Munising Visitors Bureau and the Moose Lodge, with sponsors being Peoples State Bank and Hiawatha Telephone Co.

Family fun, rock bands, polka music, pumpkin carving, seasonal beers on tap and German-style food headline the day's event.

"Last year's events that were really fun, especially the beer stein endurance contest and the wiener dog races," Kusmirek said. "Hopefully this year will have just as much fun if not more."

The event took place for the first time in 2012.

"Rocktoberfest was an idea I had with The Munising Visitors Bureau last year," Kusmirek said. "The idea was to put together an event to celebrate the fall colors and the beauty of the Upper Peninsula with live music and fun things to do for the whole family along with some great food."

A percentage of the proceeds from today's event will benefit an Alger County charity as well as supporting community projects throughout the county.

The day's activities begin at 1 p.m. with the ceremonial tapping of the keg, followed by the ever-popular wiener dog race. Pre-registration is encouraged for the wiener dog race.

Rocktoberfest is designed for people of all ages, Kusmirek said, as it also features non-stop live music, polka dancing, a beer stein endurance contest, drinking games, bounce houses, games for the kids and plenty of German-style food, soda and seasonal beer on tap.

Music will be a big draw for the event.

"This year's music lineup is going to feature Nashville recording artist Motongator Joe," Kusmirek said. "There's also a great band from Marquette - Everything Under The Sun - along with another band from Escanaba called Sit Down Francis.

"And there's local music from Robin Leitch and Harbortown," Kursmirek said. "I'm trying to bring in bands from all over the U.P."

A polka inspired DJ will offer music before and in-between the live bands.

Admission to Rocktoberfest is free and parking is conveniently found near the festival site.
