Bottle/can drive at Aspen Ridge
ISHPEMING - The 8th grade class from Aspen Ridge Middle School will conduct a bottle/can drive during this week until Oct. 26.
Students will be collecting at various days and times throughout that week.
This kicks off the fundraising efforts for their class trip to Six Flags Great America in May.
'Boo to You!' presentation today
MARQUETTE - NMU's chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association will present "Boo to You!," a Halloween stories and craft program for children age 3 and up today, at 2 p.m. in the Peter White Public Library Children's Room, Marquette.

Traditional music jam at library
MARQUETTE - A traditional music jam will be held at 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., today in the Peter White Public Library's Community Room, Marquette.
Join other musicians for a community jam celebrating traditional folk music. Guitar, fiddle, banjo, dulcimer, bass players and singers are invited to try their hand at great old time tunes.
A limited quantity of sheet music is available for use for those not familiar with the songs.
Fall Harvest and Potato Fest
REPUBLIC - The Republic Lions Club will host the Fall Harvest and Potato Fest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20, at Republic-Michigamme School, Republic.
Cost is $7 adults, $3 children 5-12, free under 5.
Rock and Mineral Club meeting
ISHPEMING - The Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club will be meeting at 1:30 p.m., today at the Cliff Shaft Mine Museum, Ishpeming.
The program will included the Franklin N.J., Fluorescent Minerals DVD and the Sweetwater Agates DVD.
The first DVD will address the Franklin N.J., Fluorescent Minerals. including the Geology and Mining History, mine dumps. The second DVD will address the Sweetwater Agates, Mexican Coconuts, Agates Close Up, and Fairburn Agates.

MARQUETTE - The C.U.P. Chapter of the Sierra Club will hold its final Little Presque Isle cleanup of the season at 10 a.m. Oct. 20, in the Little Presque Isle parking lot, Marquette.
Plan on about two hours. Often we do a hike in the tract in the afternoon.

Robert Gupta to speak Monday
MARQUETTE - Northern Michigan University's student organization Platform Personalities will present speaker and advocate Robert Gupta at 7:30 p.m. Monday, in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center, Marquette.
Gupta is a Los Angeles Philharmonic violinist whose interest in neurobiology and mental health issues has made him a renowned advocate for the redemptive and regenerative power of music.
Gupta directs the organization "Street Symphony," a free classical music concert series for the unaided, mentally ill, homeless, incarcerated and veteran communities.
Tickets will be available at the door. Admission is free with an NMU student ID and $2 for the general public.
Meditation Practice Workshop
MARQUETTE -A workshop to explore the practice of meditation is being provided by the Healing Arts Center of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Marquette.
Led by Kevin G. Thew-Forrester, Ph.D, Episcopal Priest and certified Enneagram teacher, participants will be given the opportunity to ask questions, and receive basic resources that support the practice of meditation.

'Oz:?The Great and Powerful'

Based on the books by L. Frank Baum, this is the story of, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics who is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, He thinks fame and fortune are his for the taking until he meets three witches who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting.
Starring James Franco and Rachel Weisz, "Oz: The Great and Powerful" was released in March 2013, is rated PG and runs for 130 minutes.

Winter curriculum planning
MARQUETTE - The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will hold winter curriculum planning sessions from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday and Nov. 7, in 404A Cohodas Hall on Northern Michigan University, Marquette.
NCLL members are invited to plan and coordinate a schedule of events for the upcoming winter 2014 NCLL term.
Any presentation, activity, class/workshop, tour, field trip, or even new interest group ideas are welcome.

Digital photography program
MARQUETTE - The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will hold an introductory digital photography program from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 28, and Nov. 11, at the Lakeview Arena Citizen's Forum Room, Marquette.
Presenter Tony Williams is a commercial and fine art photographer. The class is intended to introduce the beginning photographer to using a digital camera, basic accessories, photographic techniques, and digital editing software and their use.
There will be a $5 fee for NCLL members and a fee of $10 for non-members.

NMPSA to host seminar Oct. 29
MARQUETTE - The Northern Michigan Public Service Academy is pleased to announce an upcoming seminar from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., , in the Citizen's Forum at the Lakeview Arena, Marquette.
Lew Bender, PhD, will conduct the day long training Strategic Planning for Public Sector Organizations.
Dr. Bender is Professor Emeritus with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and has over 38 years of experience working with public sector organizations. He has led over 50 public sector strategic planning efforts in his career.
This workshop focuses on strategic planning approaches for dealing with the changing realities that public sector leaders are encountering. Whether it is law enforcement, public works, recreation or administration elected and appointed leaders are facing hard choices.
Seminar fees are $25 for NMPSA members, $75 for non-members if registered by Oct. 23.
