MARQUETTE, MI. - Lois Audrey "Sally" Fisk-Ahola, 94, former Gladstone and Marquette resident, entered eternal life Friday, October 18, 2013, at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee.
Born in Marquette on June 26, 1919, Lois was the third of five children born to Ray and Bertha (Wilson) Lawrence. Her mother gave her the nickname of Sally when she was three months old. Sally was raised in Grace United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. Sally graduated from Graveraet High School in 1937 and following graduation she married Claude Fisk, during World War II, in 1942. The couple had three children, Barbara, Larry, and Nancy. Claude passed away suddenly in 1957, with the children at the ages of 12, 10, and 4. Sally not only raised her children on her own, but also owned and managed a five apartment building. In 1964, she went to work at St. Luke's Hospital, now MGH, as secretary to the administrator. In 1969, she met a wonderful man, Neil Ahola. They were married in 1971 and moved to Rudyard where Neil was the Co-op Store and Credit Union manager. In 1978 they retired and moved to Gladstone. They enjoyed their retirement and spent many winters in Florida. Neil passed away in 2005 at age 92. In 2008, Sally moved to Marquette to be closer to Nancy. Sally was a resident at Mill Creek Assisted Living and for the last two years at Eastwood Nursing Center where she was involved in as many activities as possible. She often returned to Grace Church when possible and enjoyed seeing her many lifelong friends. She was known for her smiling face and her quick wit.
Survivors include her children, Barbara Hollis of Jeffersonville, IN, Larry (Leslie) Fisk of Plainfield, NH, and Nancy (Gary) Baldwin of Marquette; her step-children, Sheldon (Beverly) Ahola of Gladstone and Sheila (Phil) Cormier of Marian, IA; nine grandchildren, Tom (Cindy) Hollis, Todd (Lorie) Hollis, Angela (Jarrod) Kern, Lars Fisk, Inga (Jason) Stenta, Paula (Jerry) Sides, Mathew (Jennifer) Baldwin, Beth (Stuart) Johnson, Christie Freir; and 24 great-grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
