CORRALES, NM. - Robert LaLonde III, age, 46 of Corrales, New Mexico passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at his home.
Robert was born in Pontiac, MI to Mary and Robert William LaLonde II on September 30, 1967.
He is survived by his mother, Mary LaLonde of Corrales, NM; his sister, Evelyn LaLonde of Austin, TX; his aunts Alberta Colty, Maxine Benson, Patsy Arnett, and Connie Taylor; numerous uncles, cousins, and his former long time partner Patty Smith.
His father, Robert William LaLonde II, preceded him in death.
Robert came to Marquette in 1985 to attend Northern Michigan University. He was a founding member of the NMU chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. In 1989, he graduated with a diploma from Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts and worked as radio broadcaster. After realizing his passion for art, he returned to NMU and earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design in 1996. Continuing in his field of study, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Metalsmithing from Arizona State University in 1999.
Upon returning to the Marquette area, he established a metalsmithing studio, creating and selling his metalwork and jewelry. An avid musician, he became involved in the local music scene-playing guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and banjo. He enjoyed playing music and with his band, the Flying Martini Brothers. From 2001-2011 he taught in the School of Art and Design at NMU.
Known for his sense of humor and love of sports, he had an unwavering devotion to the Detroit Lions and the Red Wings. Nothing made him more at peace than spending time with his dog Frida, making art, and playing music.
He was fortunate to have many close friends in Marquette that he counted as family. Robert's family, friends, and his dog Frida will miss him dearly.
A memorial service will be held in Marquette at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Robert LaLonde Scholarship Fund at Northern Michigan University, School of Art and Design.
