Legion Bantams improve to 8-1-1 on season

MARQUETTE - An 8-1 victory over the Thunder Bay Wrecks of Alpena at Lakeview Arena in Marquette on Oct. 5 gave the Marquette American Legion Bantam AA hockey team a sweep of the downstate foe.

Earlier the same day, Legion routed the Wrecks, 9-2.

In the nightcap, Nick Bink scored twice to power the offense for Marquette (4-1-1 overall, 2-0 NIHL). Ryan Morrissey, Joey Phillips, Shane Ring, Gavin Schwalbach, Justin Hendrickson and Colin Gaffney added single markers.

Recording assists were Hunter Doucette, Gaffney, Branden Woodward, Hendrickson (2), Justin Moyle, Bink, Phillips (2), Alec Gadzinski and Spencer Samppala.

Goaltender Dylan Sibilsky made 11 saves for Marquette, which led 5-0 after one period; Daniel Shattuck turned aside 41 shots for Alpena.

In the first game, Bink notched four goals, while Morrissey and Gaffney added two apiece for Legion. Doucette also tallied for Legion.

Drawing assists were Bink (2), Phillips (2), Samppala, Hendrickson, Ring (2), Ethan Jones (2), Morrissey (2), Schwalbach, Gaffney, Moyle, Doucette and Aydin Frost.

Luke McCarthy turned aside nine shots on goal for Legion; Fletcher Bolda made 43 stops for Alpena.

"Overall, it was a good, two-game series by the boys," Legion head coach Brian Nebel said. "We had eight different goal scorers and 14 players collecting assists.

"That's a good team effort."

The Legion won four more games this past weekend downstate to improve to 6-0 NIHL and 8-1-1 overall.

On Friday, the Legion won 14-0 against the Northern Avalanche of the Mackinaw City Bantam AA in Cheboygan.

Bink, Spencer DenBeste, Morrissey, Phillips, Samppala, Gadzinski, Moyle, Woodward and Ring all had goals for the Legion. Assists came from Hendrickson, DenBeste, Bink, Jones, Samppala, Ring, Moyle, Gadzinski, Morrissey, Phillips, Schwalbach, Gaffney and Woodward. McCarthy made 11 saves for the Legion.

On Saturday, the Legion swept the Thunder Bay Wrecks of Alpena Bantam AA in Alpena, 5-0 and 14-4.

DenBeste and three of the five goals in Game 1 while Phillips and Gadzinski had the others. Bink, Gadzinski and Hendrickson had assists. Sibilsky made 10 saves.

In game 2, Doucette, Phillips, Bink, Gaffney, Gadzinksi, Woodward, Morrissey, Schwalbach and Hendrickson had goals. Assists went to Phillips, Gadzinski, Moyle, Ring, Rink, DenBeste, Samppala, Morrissey, Andrew Pieper, Hendrickson, Bink and Woodward. McCarthy stopped 19 shots.

On Sunday, the Legion topped the Northern Avalanche again, this time in Mackinaw City, 12-1.

Gaffney, Bink, Phillips, Doucette, Frost and Morrissey had the goals. Assists went to Doucette, Frost, DenBeste, Jones, Moyle, Phillips, Gaffney, Hendrickson, Samppala, Ring, Woodward, Bink, Gadzinski, and Morrissey. Sibilsky made three saves.

"I give our guys credit for staying focused and to keep working on things we have been practicing, which is tough to do sometimes in these lopsided games," Nebal said. "I give credit to Mackinaw as they never gave up, they kept on working, until they scored near the end of the game, and they kept it clean, as only one penalty was called in the entire game."

The Legion hosts Canadian Soo AAA minor this Saturday and Sunday.

The Marquette City Insurance Pee Wee AA hockey team tied the Alpena Wrecks, 2-2, and the dropped a 4-3 decision as the local team opened play in the NIHL season on Oct 5.

In the morning game, Gaetano Cammarata and Cooper Anderson scored for the Sentinels, with Luke Beerman picking up two assists.

City Insurance goaltender Tyler Bergwall made 13 saves.

In the 4-3 afternoon loss, Beerman and Jon Jason each posted a goal and an assist. Cammarata added a single tally.

Jakob Peterson and Chris Sliva collected assists for the Sentinels.

Preston Maki turned aside 22 shots on goal.
