Ruth E. Winter

NEGAUNEE, MI. - Ruth Elizabeth Winter, 80, of Negaunee entered eternal life at 1:50 PM on Friday, October 11, 2013 at the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had been a patient since April of 2012 after a short battle with cancer.

Ruth was born November 5, 1932, the youngest of 12 children to Frank B. and Saima (Liimatainen) Jarvi in Negaunee. She was raised in Negaunee Township and was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1950.

On October 5, 1951 she married Raymond L. Saari. They made their home in Negaunee and started a family.

Raymond passed away in January of 1978. Ruth married John H.E. Perala in June 1979. He preceded her in death in September 1993. She married Jacob "Jocko" Winter in December 2004 and lived in Gwinn until moving to the Valley View Apartments in Negaunee in 2006.

Ruth worked as a bookkeeper at various businesses including Hubard Accounting, Trudell Plumbing and Heating, Spear and Sons, Ojala Upholstery, Airport Restaurant, Negaunee Co-Op, Mark Jylha Drywall, and prepared income tax returns for numerous clients.

Ruth was involved with many social organizatons including the Negaunee V.F.W. Auxiliary, Negaunee Eagles Club, Negaunee Rod and Gun Club, and the Charley Lakes Area Campers Association. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee.

Ruth was very proud of her Finnish heritage, her family, and the family camp on Charley Lakes near Gwinn. She loved to knit, read, bake, have a beer, share stories, a hot sauna, a good joke, watching Lawrence Welk and Finland Calling, and the music at Eastwood.

Surviving are her husband Jacob Winter, residing at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, five daughters: Cynthia Elvetici of Negaunee, Virginia (Patrick) O'Brien,Sr. of Ishpeming, Patricia (Alan) Saari-Sherbinow of Marquette, Donna Cardone of Marquette, Rita (Kevin) Haroski of Waupun, WI, one son Frank "Binky" Saari of Negaunee, ten grandchildren: Charles and Lucas Elvetici, Terri (Adam) Ostola, Patrick (Jackie) O'Brien,Jr., Perry (Jessi) Nora, Nikki (Aaron) Loehr, Joshua (Chrissy) Saari, Raina (Chad) Yamry, Erin (Jeff) Fallgatter, and Jessica (Mike) Klaver, two step-grandchildren: Michele (Bart) Kroger and Sam Sherbinow, 19 great grandchildren and two on the way. Also surviving are two sisters: Irja Kallioinen and Aino "Honey" Uren, one sister-in-law June Jarvi, all of Negaunee. Ruth was "Auntie Ooper" to numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands Raymond Saari and John Perala, her son Matthew Saari in April of 1984, son-in-law Ronald Elvetici in March 2011, a granddaughter Tina O'Brien Nelson in March 2013, sisters: Suoma Horst Kultala, Taimi Carlson, Kaino Jurvelin, and Naima Morrison, brothers: Frank T., Selim, Bernhard, Eino, and Raymond "Heikki" Jarvi.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, October 16 at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. D. Michael Carriere officiating. Burial was in the Negaunee Cemetery.
