By Journal Sports Staff , The Mining Journal

MARQUETTE - The Ishpeming Hematites are still a unanimous pick as the No. 1 team in Division 7 in the state of Michigan according to a state-wide panel of five Associated Press voters, while in the Upper Peninsula Sports Writers and Sportscasters Association, there is still a 3-2 split on who the top team should be in the U.P. Big Five poll.

Menominee, which at 7-0 and ranked No. 2 in Division 5 by the AP, beat out Ishpeming (7-0) again this week for the top spot in the UPSAA Big Five poll by a single first place vote. The Maroons garnered a first-place vote in the AP poll but still trail Portland by three.

Negaunee (6-1) maintained its No. 3 ranking in the UPSSA Big Five poll after a 28-24 road loss at Ishpeming on Friday, but slipped to No. 9 in the AP Division 6 poll.

West Iron County (7-0) overtook Marquette for the No. 4 spot in the Big Five despite the Redmen being on the bye. The Wykons are 7-0 for only the second time in school history.

The top four spots in the UPSSA Little Five poll remain unchanged while L'Anse (6-1) enters the poll at No. 5. The Purple Hornets are now back-to-back MHSAA playoff qualifiers for the first time in school history.

Ishpeming travels to Newberry this week for a nonconference game against the Indians while Negaunee hosts Marquette in the Diamond Jubilee game.
