NMU volleyball: Wildcat sweep Walsh at Vandament Arena

MARQUETTE - Posting its second sweep of the weekend, the Northern Michigan University women's volleyball team topped Walsh 3-0 on Saturday at Vandament Arena in Marquette.

The win improves the Wildcats' record to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in the GLIAC, tying with Ferris State University for first in the North Division.

Besides a one-point lead to start set three, Walsh found itself behind for the entire match as NMU dominated with set scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-10.

Northern posted point streaks throughout the match, beginning the first set with a 6-0 lead on sophomore Alex Berger's serve.

The Cavaliers nearly came back in the second set, closing the NMU lead to 14-13, before the 'Cats scored four consecutive points on senior Sarah Hamilton's serve.

In the third set, the Wildcats jumped out to a 5-1 lead on freshman Alex Larsen's serve and maintained the lead for the rest of the set to close out the match.

Offensively, NMU recorded 14 service aces and a .398 attack percentage against the Cavaliers. Hamilton, Larsen and senior Lina Lopes led NMU in kills with 10, nine and eight, respectively.

Senior Kellisha Harley tallied 35 assists for the 'Cats, while defensively, Lopes led with 10 digs.

NMU ended the match with eight total blocks; Larson, freshman Bridget Bussel and Hamilton collected four block assists each.

The Wildcats came into Saturday's match after a Friday sweep of Malone University, with set scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-22.

Senior Wildcats led the way with double digit kills from Hamilton, Kalli Herron and Lopes.

Berger had a team-high 11 digs, and Harley came up with 41 assists for NMU.

Overall, the 'Cats tallied 49 kills and turned in a .288 attack percentage against the Pioneers.

NMU travels to Ohio next weekend to take on GLIAC opponents Ohio Dominican on Friday and Tiffin on Saturday.
