ELY TWP, MI. - Kevin Smith, age 51, of Ely Twp. passed away unexpectedly on Sunday October 6, 2013 at his home.
Dale Kevin Smith was born November 9, 1961 at K.I. Sawyer Hospital the son of the late Melvin and Henrietta (Foye) Smith. He grew up in Skandia and was a graduate of the Gwinn High School, Class of 1979.
Kevin had served in the United States Army from 1981 1985, which included US military action in Granada. He married Sarah Rochon on May 16, 1981 and together they raised three children, Stacey, Jennifer and Cory.
Following his military time, Kevin attended Northern Michigan University, receiving a bachelor degree in electronic engineering. Kevin had worked for Cleveland Cliffs at the Empire Mine for 8 years, and then for the past 11 years had worked for UPPCO, most recently as a lead substation technician.
Kevin was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing and restoring classic cars with his son Cory. He also enjoyed spending time at his camp on the Peshekee Grade with his family, along with singing.
He made a hobby of performing Karaoke, even winning several competitions, and was especially honored to sing for both of his daughter's weddings. Kevin was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and of the Ely Twp. First Responders.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years Sarah, 2 daughters Stacey (Wayne) Filizetti and Jennifer (Michael) Niehaus both of Gwinn, son Cory Smith of Green Bay and his fiancee Kathryn Hoffman, seven grandchildren Steven, Mikol, Josh, Laila, Melissa, Amarah Filizetti and Lucas Niehaus, 4 sisters Barbara Bushaw of Marysville, MI, Bette Jo (Pat) Miljour of Gwinn, Cindy Harmon of South Carolina, Lisa (Ray) Johnson of Skandia; 4 brothers Robert (Sandy) Smith of Tennessee, Lowell Smith of Virginia, Melvin (Anne) Smith of North Carolina and Michael (Alicia) Smith of Fife Lake, MI, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Josephine Wakefield.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming.
Funeral services will follow at 11:00am on Thursday at the Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Lindenberg to officiate, with military honors accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380.
Interment will take place at the Gwinn Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the Fellowship Hall at the church.
