Decision lacks sense

October 9, 2013
Scott M. Smith , The Mining Journal

To the Journal editor:

I would like to express my disappointment in our National Park Service after seeing barricades placed at the parking area of the Munising Falls. Clearly the park service has entered the political arena and stooped to a level equal to that of our U.S. congressmen and women.

The Munising Falls is an unstaffed area as is much of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. I am puzzled as to why National Park Staff was used to block off public access to unstaffed park properties, when those areas were not important enough to staff when the parks were open prior to the government shutdown.

It seems a bit vindictive toward the public. It's quite childish actually when more resources are used to close an area than is used to keep it open.

(I am) sincerely disappointed
