MARQUETTE - Marquette Senior High School looks to keep its record perfect at the season-ending Upper Peninsula Championships high school boys soccer tournament on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Kaufman Sports Complex in Marquette.
This year's six-team field includes the Redmen, Escanaba, Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Sault Ste. Marie and Ironwood.
Marquette has won the title each year this tourney has been held since 2007, the year that U.P. teams were no longer allowed to play in the Lower Peninsula tournament as part of the settlement in the volleyball lawsuit against the Michigan High School Athletic Association that forced realignment of many high school seasons.
MSHS plays Escanaba at 10 a.m. on Field 2, the regular varsity field, and Kingsford at 1:30 p.m. in the same location in a pool made up of those three teams. The other pool includes IM, the Soo and Ironwood.
The second-place teams square off against each other, as do the third-place teams, at 3:15 p.m., while the pool winners play for the championship at 5 p.m.
Games will consists of 30-minute halves with no overtime. While winning games is the most important goal, points will be allocated for several achievements - six points are awarded for a win, three for a tie and none for a loss, then also one point for a shutout and one point for each goal scored up to three maximum.
Tiebreakers include goals scored, goals allowed and head-to-head competition, and if a tie still exists, a series of penalty kicks.
The event's make-up date will be the following Saturday, Oct. 26, and will be decided during the afternoon of Oct. 18.
