MARQUETTE - Nick Bink, Joey Phillips and Luke McCarthy led the Marquette American Legion Bantam AA hockey team to an 8-0 victory over the Summitt Plastics 99 squad Sept. 22 in the consolation game of the Rumble on the Rink Tournament in downstate Fraser.
Bink and Phillips scored two goals apiece and McCarthy turned aside 11 shots on goal as the Legion squad opened its 2013-14 season at the tourney.
Alec Gadzinski, Brandon Woodward, Ryan Morrissey and Spencer DenBeste also notched markers for Marquette, which led 3-0 after the first period.
Drawing assists were Bink (2), Gadzinski, DenBeste, Aydin Frost (2), Hunter Doucette, Colin Gaffney, Ethan Jones (2), Phillips and Andrew Pieper.
"It was a great game and a great effort," Legion coach Brian Nebel said. "We really liked our jump and speed on the ice."
The day before, Legion blanked the Columbus Capitals, 8-0 after losing to the Troy Sting 99's, 5-1.
In the win, DenBeste (2), Gadzinski, Doucette, Bink (2), Phillips and Woodward dented the twine for Marquette.
Picking up helpers were Bink, Jones (2), DenBeste (2), Frost, Shane Ring (3), Justin Moyle and Gavin Schwalbach.
Goaltender Dylan Sibilsky made 10 saves for the shutout.
In the loss to Troy, in which Marquette trailed just 2-1 after the second period, DenBeste notched Legion's lone goal, assisted by Bink and Phillips.
McCarthy stopped 26 shots on goal for Marquette.
Nebel's club opened its season and the tournament with a 2-2 tie with the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Komets.
DenBeste scored a shorthanded goal - assisted by Justin Hendrickson and Spencer Samppalla -at 1:42 of the third period to forge the tie.
Bink also notched a shorthanded goal, with helpers from Hendrickson and Samppala, in the first period.
Sibilsky posted 12 saves.
