MARQUETTE - The Marquette County Board voted to approve a $11,000 bid Tuesday for a sidewalk, landing and staircase replacement project at the Marquette County Courthouse.
A & F Construction of Marquette was awarded the bid and was the lowest of three bidders on the project, which will be completed before winter. The other two companies were Premeau Construction with a $16,692 bid and Arrow Construction that bid $24,250.
Marquette County facilities manager Aaron Karlstrom said in a memo to county administrator Scott Erbisch the sidewalk landing portion of the project consists of removing badly deteriorated ground pavers and replacing them with colored 6-inch-thick concrete at the ground floor east entrance to the courthouse annex.

"The current surface is uneven with missing pavers creating the potential for a trip hazard," Karlstrom wrote.
The new concrete will be graded to shed water in the most efficient manner and incorporate drainage underneath the slab to prevent heaving during freeze-thaw cycles, Karlstrom said. The new slope of the landing will meet Michigan barrier-free standards.
In addition, the west staircase connected to the Spring Street city sidewalk will be reconstructed. Karlstrom said the reconstruction is necessary because the base of the staircase has deteriorated to a point where routine repairs are no longer cost-effective. The new stairs have been designed to decrease the pitch of the sidewalk, making the stairs safer to navigate, Karlstrom said.
A & F Construction has previously worked on several projects for the county, including a recent re-grading of the jail sally port and renovation of the Ishpeming Service Center.
