GWINN, MI. - Sandra Hart Christian, 69, of Marquette, Michigan died Thursday, September 19, 2013, at home, surrounded by her family and in the care of Lake Superior Hospice.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 25, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Helen Hart. She is preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell A. Christian, to whom she was married 35 years.
Sandra graduated from Salisbury State University in 1987, Magna Cum Laude, with a BA in English (Creative Writing). While at SSU, she won the prestigious Hess Award for creative writing twice, 1986 and 1987. She received her MA in English from Ohio University in 1989, where she attended on a full scholarship, and received the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. A believer in continued education she returned to school graduating from Vermont College with an MFA in Writing in 1999.
Sandra taught English at Ohio University, Salisbury State University, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where she received tenure in 2004. Twenty-one of her poems were published in eleven different publications including the Maryland Review, Tar River Poetry, Iowa Woman, Seasons, and the Clark Street Review. She was a member of Sigma Tau Delta (International English Honor Society) and Lambda Iota Tau (International Literature Honor Society). She was awarded the Outstanding Woman Award at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in both 1995 and 1998.
She is survived by her two children, Daric Matthew Christian and his wife, Glenda, of Gwinn, Michigan; and Drew Mitchell Christian and his wife, Debbie, of Rising Sun, Maryland. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Anna, Devin, Nathaniel, Aidan, and Matthew; two great-grandchildren, Joey and Autumn; two sisters, Debbie Nelson and Michelle Hart; four brothers, Larry, Eddie, Donald, and George Hart and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Tommy and Michael Hart.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 17th at 4 PM at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, 31353 Mount Hermon Road, Salisbury, Maryland, followed by food and fellowship in the church hall. Her son, Rev. Drew M. Christian, will officiate. There will be a private interment at a later date.
