BALTIMORE, MD. - Oiva W. Hakala, age 89, of 6622 Graceland Avenue, Baltimore, MD died early Monday morning at Franklin Square Hospital.
Oiva was born December 31, 1923 in Princeton, MI to the late Jacob and Maria (Oja) Hakala. He was a 1941 graduate of Gwinn High School. He served in the army from 1944-1946 and was honorably discharged. He attended Michigan Tech starting in 1946 and graduated in 1949. Oiva (Huck) worked as a mining engineer in Idaho and Michigan ending his career at the Empire Mine as their Safety Engineer. He was a past member of the VFW and enjoyed singing with several different choral groups. While with the Marquette group he traveled to New York City and sang in Carnegie Hall. Oiva (Huck) and his wife Betty enjoyed traveling and living in many different places but closest to their hearts were their Family and many Friends.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Betty, two daughters, Beth (Jerry) Jaremczuk of Baltimore, MD, Julie (Donny) Robinson of Bloomsburg, PA; three sons, Jack (Maggie) of Canton, MI, Jeffrey (Eddie Jean) of Kemah, TX, Peter (Naomi) of Honolulu, HI, his grandchildren; Tricia Perry, Michael Jaremczuk, Drew (Erica), Dustin (Jen) Megan, Jill, Jeremy, Jamie, Jesse, Jason, Janice Hakala, Stacie and Jared Goodreau. Great Grandchildren; Belle and Mia Perry, Jordan Brafford, Payton and Michael Jaremczuk, Jacob, Sara, Nicholas, Tavish, Sophia , and Suvi Hakala. One brother, Donald Hakala of Campbell, TX, one sister-in-law, Viona Hakala of Livonia, MI and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers Irving, Rudolph, Alfred and Edwin Hakala. three sisters; Aune Pelkie, Ellen Kirmo, Irene Perry and his niece Anne Hakala Schilling.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association in lieu of flowers. Visitation will take place Friday, September 27 at the Eastwood Apostolic Church 121 Sunset Drive in Negaunee from 11:00 AM to 1:00PM with the service beginning at 1:00.
